This Week at WMES
Week of October 16-20

Dear WMES families:
A reminder that our October calendar can be found on our webpage.

Grade 4 families: You should receive an email today with your child’s Provincial Assessment results from last year’s Grade 3 Math and Literacy assessments.  There are two different reports.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher or to Mrs. Wolfe.

October is International Walk to School Month (and Walk at School Month).  On October 18th (weather permitting) our classes will go outside together to walk for the environment, physical activity, safety and fun!

We are hosting a Family Flu Shot Clinic in our cafeteria on October  24th from 2 to 6pm.   We will send more information soon on how to sign up.

October 16-20 is School Bus Safety Week in Nova Scotia:

Did you know that HRCE has more than 30,000 students who ride the school bus every day?
School Bus Safety Week is a great time to remind students, families and schools of a few daily safety tips that everyone can follow to ensure all students get to school safely.

Bus Stop Safety

  • Be on time for the bus and please don’t run to/from the bus.
  • Stand back off the road and don't push or shove when waiting at a stop.
  • Always cross in front of the bus. Walk three metres (10 feet) in front of the bus to a point where you can see the driver and wait for the driver's signal to cross. Proceed to the centre of the road, STOP, LOOK & LISTEN and cross the road when it is safe.
  • Never crawl under a school bus or cross the road behind the bus.
  • Know the danger zones around the bus.

School Bus Safety

  • Please respect and listen to the driver and avoid distracting them.
  • Please keep noise levels to a minimum.
  • Do not stand or move seats while the bus is in motion.
  • Never put your hands, arms, feet or head out of the bus window.
  • Ask the driver for permission before you open the bus windows.
  • Do not throw anything inside the bus or out of the windows.
  • Keep the aisle clear at all times when the bus is in motion.

You can find out more information about School Bus Safety Week, including more safety tips, here.

Our Parent/Teacher Cooperative (PTC) is hosting a “Halloween Howl” next Thursday, October 26th from 6-7pm.   This is a Halloween themed dance for students and family members.  Everyone is welcome to come dressed up (we just ask that costumes are family friendly please).  All students must come accompanied by an adult.
We are not serving food at this event, so we encourage you to have supper before you come.

There is no school for students on Friday, October 28th.
It is provincial Conference Day across Nova Scotia.

Halloween is quickly approaching.  Students and staff are permitted to wear costumes on Halloween day (Tuesday, October 31st), but here are some important reminders:

  • Costumes must be school appropriate.  No masks or weapons please.
  • We recommend saving your more elaborate costumes for home so that they do not get damaged, soiled or parts lost at school.
  • Please check with the classroom teacher to see if they have any special requests. Each teacher may need to make individual decisions based on the specific needs of students in their room.
  • Please do not send in treats to share unless the classroom teacher has requested it.

Thanks everyone.  Have a great week.
Mrs. Wolfe and Mrs. van der Weegen
